Dog clothes: how to choose and match clothes for your dog?

Dog clothes

Until a few years ago, seeing dog in a suit everyone would think that this is a whim of the Keepers, tormenting the pet, inventions.

After all, a dog, an animal, has its own hair and fur, so why clothes?

However, we now know that in many cases wearing clothes is definitely advisable.

Many breeds of dogs bred in Poland are not adapted to our climatic conditions and require additional measures to protect against frost, rain or snow.

If you are not sure whether your pet needs clothes, see how it behaves during a walk in the autumn and winter.

If he is reluctant to go out and his walks are limited to the necessary minimum, and after walks he likes to lie by the heater - it is worth getting him protective clothing in the form of a warm coat.

The general rule is that if your dog has a short top coat and a small amount of undercoat and subcutaneous fat - it is worth getting a protective suit.

Which dog clothes to choose? What to consider when buying? I will try to explain a little more about dog clothes in the article below.

Types of dog clothes

Types of dog clothes

Let's start by dividing the clothes into three main groups.

Functional clothing

The most popular are mantle-style clothes - with openings for the front limbs and a longer part, reaching the lumbar spine.

They protect the entire back of the dog from unfavorable weather conditions.

They are comfortable and convenient, do not restrict movements, and do not hinder the fulfillment of physiological needs.

They are often insulated, with a soft fleece on the inside.

The outer shell is most often made of a shell that is impervious to rain and snow.

They cover practically the entire body of the pet, also covering the stomach.

They often have punched holes to help meet physiological needs.

They are most often indicated for small dogs, miniature breeds and young animals for the most unfavorable weather conditions.

They have sleeves and legs that also protect your pet's limbs from cold and moisture. They are also mostly insulated and equipped with a raincoat.

When choosing this model of dog clothes, it is worth paying special attention to the adjustment of the cuffs at the legs and sleeves - too tight ones will cause discomfort.

Raincoats are becoming more and more popular. They are made of waterproof material, often with reflective elements, making it easier to see your pet after dark.

They cover the entire back, they also have a hood to cover the head.

They make life easier for Caregivers of dogs with intense hair, which often do not look very favorable after a walk in the rain.

Sweatshirts, sweaters, vests are great for dogs of naked breeds, such as:

  • Chinese crested dog,
  • mexican naked dog.

They are thinner than coats, so they are perfect for home use.

They are also perfect for:

  • greyhounds,
  • greyhounds,
  • whippets.

They protect against the cold, but are not waterproof.

Dog Sweatshirt

The variety of patterns and colors allows you to match the sweater to each dog.

Since we are talking about greyhounds, we cannot ignore scarves and scarves, which are also part of the wardrobe. They look fantastic on impressively long and shapely greyhound necks, but are of questionable weather protection value, and tied too tightly can be dangerous.

Post-operative clothes for a dog

Garments used to protect the wound after surgery are a separate category.

Here, the dog handler does not have much choice if it is necessary to apply it. Such clothes are usually tied on the pet's back and cover the entire torso.

They are recommended after almost all abdominal and thoracic surgeries.

Some doctors are moving away from the necessity to use clothing in favor of protective collars, but in the case of many procedures, postoperative bodysuits are irreplaceable.

Models with a special pocket, where you can insert absorbent material, ensure efficient drainage of secretions from the wound are very common.

The garment should only be prescribed by a veterinarian, as there are several situations in which it should not be used (for example, poorly healing, sparse skin wounds, with intense discharge).

The decision to remove the clothes should also be made after consulting a doctor - removing too early may damage a delicate scar or premature removal of stitches.

The downside of using postoperative clothes is the slightly slower healing process of the skin integuments.

Decorative garments are most often used by Keepers of small and miniature dogs.

Small dogs dressed up in a tie or a frilly dress look cute and cute, but it's worth thinking about the pet's comfort.

In this group of clothes, the most goods are of dubious quality (artificial materials, protruding and scratching decorations) and that make the functioning of the pet difficult (too tight, constraining movements, uncomfortable).

Dressing a dog in a strange costume, for example for a photo session, is understandable, but the use of this type of clothing on a daily basis is definitely not recommended.

How to choose a dog clothes?

When choosing a garment, you should consider what it will be used for?

Is it to protect against cold, rain or other unfavorable conditions?

It is good to pay attention to the composition of the materials from which the garment is made. Of course, it is best if they are natural materials with a minimum admixture of artificial fibers.

You should also look at the quality of the garment.

It is especially important to finish places that will be smoothly adjacent to the body. It is important that there are no irritating elements, seams made of hard materials or tags near the armpits and groin.

It is worth paying attention to the additional elements of the clothes - some of them are equipped with reflective elements, pockets for delicacies, or cuffs, which make the material stick to your pet more closely.

An important issue in choosing the perfect dog clothes is his size.

Pay attention to the detailed dimensions of your pet - the circumference of the chest at the widest point, the circumference of the neck and the length of the back.

Each manufacturer has its own "sizes ", so when choosing another clothes for a pet, from a different company than usual, it is worth comparing the dimensions and not being influenced by the usually chosen size.

In addition to aesthetic and protective qualities, the garment must be comfortable. It cannot restrict movements, hinder everyday functioning, and meet physiological needs.

Is it worth choosing a pet's outfit with your own accessories??

This is quite a controversial issue. Personally, I would bet on the pet's comfort anyway.

The dog is not able to understand and appreciate the prestige of wearing brand clothes, but it perfectly feels the discomforts associated with, for example, too tight legs or material that does not allow air to pass through.

Many famous fashion designers have created products and entire lines of pet clothes. Gucii, Prada, Burberry are just some of the fashion houses that care about the fashionable appearance of dogs. I think that it is important to keep balance and not to overdo it, especially since the cost of "brand " clothes for pets can be up to several hundred zlotys.

Dog Clothes - When You Should Not Use Them?

There are several situations in which it is actually better not to put on any clothes on your pets.

The first is the one in which they clearly do not wish to do so. Clothing should improve the comfort of life, not hinder everyday functioning, so if the dog does everything to get rid of it after putting it on, it may be worth saving him from discomfort.

Of course, this rule does not apply to postoperative clothes, which should be removed only after consulting the attending physician.

It makes no sense to dress dogs that are adapted to living in a cold climate. Therefore, it is not advisable to dress dogs of such breeds as:

  • siberian husky,
  • samoyed,
  • Caucasian Shepherd.

You should not use the wrong size, too tight clothes (because they can cause abrasions and damage to the epidermis) and too loose (they make it difficult to move and do not stick to the pet's body - they do not fulfill their function).

Dog shoes

Dog shoes

A separate category of dog clothes is the selection of protective shoes.

They work great in winter - they protect delicate paw pads from snow, cold and very harmful road salt, which causes drying of the skin.

They are also useful in other circumstances - it is worth putting them on your pet when you go to a place where you can find broken bottles, glass, sharp stones.

They work very well when we want to protect an already injured paw or a cut pad from further damage to the ground.

In this case, it is also worth paying attention to the size as well as the material from which the shoe is made. Particular attention should be paid to the soles - whether they are rubber, caoutchouc or other material, whether they have a non-slip tread.

Summing up this article, I urge you to be reasonable.

A jacket that protects against the cold and rain will actually be useful for many dogs. However, I do not think that it is necessary to have a whole wardrobe of clothes for a pet, matching the shade of each pair of shoes of his Guardians.

Please remember that the clothes should fulfill certain functions and, most importantly, they should not hinder your dogs' life.
