The secrets of a well-chosen litter box

Few people know that choosing the right litter box for a cat is as easy as counting to three. And yet, not all cats are happy to choose the toilet we provide. What to pay attention to if your cat accepts the chosen model?

Size matters

The size of the litter box is an extremely important aspect. This applies to both its length, width and depth of the litter box. It is usually believed that the litter box should be "1.5 cat ". What does this mean in practice? Our cat should be able to turn freely and sit upright in the covered litter box. We should provide at least one litter box per cat. For more than three cats, a minimum of 1.5 litter boxes for 2 cats is recommended, but it is never simple math. Therefore, determining the number of litter boxes will depend on the size of the territory, the amount of resources and the spatial organization of the place of residence, and habits, and not only on the number of cats.

Cats have different preferences and they can also change with age. For a smaller cat or a kitten, the litter box should not be too deep and the entrance should be cut out. This solution will also work for an older cat with painful joints. The kitten will be happy to dig a lot in the litter box, so if you are irritated by the scattered litter all over the apartment, training for a covered litter box is a good idea. For cat diggers and longhair cats, it is worth placing a special doormat in front of the cat's toilet. Then the cats will not carry the litter on their paws and hair all over the apartment.

The basic problem is that not all cats are satisfied with one litter box. Certainly, in the case of more than one cat, we should take into account the necessity to provide as many toilets as we have cats. Often in multi-cat environments, animals share a toilet without much fuss. It usually depends on the intensity of cleaning and applies to open litter boxes. In the case of closed litter boxes (with or without a hatch), the exit from the litter box can be a place for cat battles. There may be a role of a "resource gatekeeper" who will keep colleagues from going to the toilet. In the case of corner litter boxes, it is important that our cat can turn freely in it.

Where the cat walks

Another key element is the selection of the location of the cuvette. Usually we humans place the litter box based on our convenience - not the cat's preferences. First of all, the litter box should not be in the same room as the cat is eating. It should also be at least 2 meters away from places to rest (such as a den or a scratching post). This is dictated by the behavioral need of the cat, which, as a predator, feels exposed to threats at the time of defecation and does not do it in areas where it is easy to find. Therefore, placing the litter box under the scratching post may not be the best idea and lead to resignation from using one of the devices.

The place for the litter box should be quiet, well-ventilated and out of the way from communication routes in the apartment. For this reason, we usually choose a bathroom or a corner of the room, or a quiet place on the balcony. It happens that the cat defecates outside the litter box and makes us understand that the place where we have set the toilet does not suit him. It is worth remembering that there may be more obvious reasons for soiling. The cat usually takes care of itself outside the litter box, because it has not been cleaned or another cat (or dog) has prevented it from being used. You should also consider health concerns and consult your cat's veterinarian.

It is estimated that almost half of the cats living in Polish homes are outgoing cats. This means that they take care of most of their needs outside their place of residence. This has its pros and cons. Such cats should be dewormed regularly according to the schedule recommended by ESCCAP (read here), as they are more likely to be infected.

Clean as cat litter

Cats don't like to reveal their presence. They feel the master of situations where they decide where and how to find them. A smell that shows their presence causes stress and frustration. That is why cats try to bury their droppings, they like to settle down in the bathtub or in large flat spaces so that the smell "evaporates " quickly. Using a cat's toilet usually means a litter box covered with litter, which comes in many types with different properties, you can read more about it here.

The key feature of our cat's litter is its cleanliness. Because the cat is a clean animal and he is very stressed by the need to compromise on this topic, which can even lead to health problems. Cleaning at least once a day is a standard that you need to remember and include in your daily duties. A dirty litter box can be a reason for avoiding it, because its intense smell reveals the cat's whereabouts, making it want to stay away from it. The topic becomes more complicated when we have more cats.

Choosing a litter box is a serious matter, so it should be made taking into account not only the interior design and comfort, but also the cat's preferences and needs. Thanks to this, both us and our cat will get better together.
