The tarantula - characteristics, photos, breeding, reproduction

The curly tarantula's body is covered on its entire surface with characteristic twisted hairs and it is these curls that the spider owes its species name. Until recently, the Latin name of the spider was Brachypelma albopilosum, but in 2019 researchers identified a new type of Tliltocatl for a group of several tarantulas, and since then the spider is known as Tliltocatl albopilosus. It is one of the most popular house-bred spiders, it is suitable as a tarantula for a beginner grower. How to prepare for breeding a spider? What terrarium to prepare? Where in nature we meet a spider? You will find the answers in the text.

Characteristics of the curly tarantula, or what does the curly tarantula look like and what are its characteristics

The tarantula - spider description, origin, venom

What a female curly tarantula looks like? Where does the tarantula come from?

The tarantula, affectionately called curly by breeders, does not stand out with its colors. Its body is black or brown in color and has no particular ornamentation. What is remarkable about this species is its body and legs, which are covered with curly orange or red hair. It is a medium-sized spider - the body of an adult female is up to 8 cm and her legs span up to 16 cm. The male is smaller and slender - his body length is approx.6 cm. The tarantula is a long-lived spider - the female can live up to 20 years, unfortunately the male lives several times shorter, on average 3-4 years. And what does it look like in other spiders?

  • Ptasznik goliath - females can live up to 25 years,
  • Australian tarantula - the female lives up to 20 years,
  • Acanthoscurria geniculata - an adult female can also live up to 20 years.

Where in nature we meet Brachypelma albopilosum? These will be the areas of South and Central America. Kędzior lives in countries such as Brazil, Panama, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Mexico. The tarantula is best suited to the humid climate of rainforests. It is a ground-dwelling spider that tends to avoid climbing tall trees. He builds his hiding place in burrows abandoned by rodents or he digs a hole himself. It lives between protruding tree roots and in thickets.

What the curly tarantula eats? What to feed a spider in a farm? Whether his venom is strong?

The wild curly tarantula hunts mainly on insects and small vertebrates. The time when it is most active is at night. The spider hunts with the ambush method, most often hiding in the bushes and waiting for passing insects and small animals. At the end of each leg, it has smell, taste and vibration sensitive receptors that allow it to locate its prey. Upon noticing her, he immediately lunges at her and injects a paralyzing poison.

The venom itself is supposed to paralyze the victim and digest it at the same time. After liquefying the entrails, the Dalmatian tarantula sucks them up, leaving only the undigested parts of the prey. And whether the tarantula venom is dangerous to humans? If we are not allergic to any of the components of the toxin, we should be fine. The strength of the venom is comparable to that of wasp.

What to feed the tarantula we keep at home? The food should be adjusted to the size of the spider - it is assumed that it should not be larger than it. We can feed small spiders in the L1 stage with fruit flies - we feed them every 3-5 days. Older spiders should eat food insects such as locusts, crickets and cockroaches - we should feed them once every 1-2 weeks. This will also be the case for other spider species, such as the Goliath tarantula, the Australian tarantula, and Acanthoscurria geniculata.

Breeding and terrarium for curly tarantula - how to arrange a tank?

What are the correct dimensions of the terrarium? Does the spider need a lot of space?

When designing a reservoir for Brachypelma albopilosum, we must remember a few rules. The tarantula is a terrestrial spider, so the terrarium for it should not be too high. For an adult individual, dimensions 30x20x20 cm will be suitable. Glass terrariums are the most popular for tarantulas. The tank must have gravity ventilation (openings on one side of the terrarium at the top, and on the other at the bottom), so that air can be exchanged for fresh air. The lack of such ventilation in combination will cause mold growth. Fortunately, most terrariums today have such ventilation, so finding the right one shouldn't be a problem.

The next step is to arrange the terrarium. We should take care of the following elements:

  • Substrate - a mixture of coconut fiber and peat is best. The substrate will absorb excess water and at the same time provide the right humidity in the terrarium. For curly tarantula it should be 70%. We can use a hygrometer to measure the humidity. How to ensure humidity in the terrarium? It will be easiest to spray the walls of the tank with an ordinary flower sprinkler.
  • Hideout - this is where the curl will spend the most time. The hiding place should be large enough for the spider to fit completely in it. We can buy ready-made hiding places in places such as a terrarium or pet store, and a plastic container with opaque walls or an inverted pot with a hollow entrance can also be used as a shelter.
  • Heating mat - will ensure the right temperature in the tank. Place the mat under the terrarium and connect it to the thermoregulator, on which we program the desired temperature. The tarantula should have a temperature within 26-28 degrees during the day with a several-degree drop at night.
  • Decorations, artificial plants, roots - diversify the interior of the tank.
The tarantula as the most popular species of tarantula kept at home

We keep the young spider in smaller tanks, corresponding to its size. We keep small spiders in the so-called. diabetes insipidus or a container for pizza sauce and enlarge the transitional tanks until the spider reaches adulthood. It is assumed that the terrarium should be 3 times larger than the spider itself. Or maybe you will also be interested this article on royal tarantula?

Propagation of the Dalmatian tarantula

The tarantula is one of the easier spiders to breed. Its reproduction at home should not be problematic. We just have to stick to a few rules. First of all, both the male and the female should be sexually mature - the male is able to reproduce after 9, and the female after 11 moults.

Before being allowed, the animals should be fed - after copulation, the female may try to kill and eat the male, so we should provide him with an escape route. About 2-3 months after mating, the female will start weaving a cocoon in which she will then lay eggs.

After approx. The next 2 months, the young nymphs will start to leave the cocoon and after 1-2 weeks they will turn into the L1 form.

How much is a tarantula? What is the price of the terrarium and accessories?

The tarantula is very widespread in farms, so its price is not among the highest. We will pay from 12 to 20 PLN for a Tliltocatl albopilosus Nicaragua spider in stage L1-L3. The closer to the adult form, the higher the price - a male Tliltocatl albopilosus Nicaragua with a body length of 3 cm will cost PLN 70. It is worth searching the offers of online terrarium stores and kennels, which sometimes advertise on advertising portals.

For comparison, below we present the prices of other spider species:

  • Ptasznik goliath - the price of a spider starts from PLN 200,
  • Australian tarantula - the spider is poisonous, so buying it is impossible,
  • Acanthoscurria geniculata - L1 costs 12-15 PLN.

And what is the price of the terrarium and accessories?

  • Terrarium - the price of the tank is from 50 to 100 PLN (a pet store may offer a terrarium a bit more expensive),
  • Heating mat - the price of the mat ranges from PLN 25 to PLN 40,
  • Substrate - coconut cube costs from 5 to 10 PLN,
  • Hideout - depending on its type, we can have such a hideout for free, or a more elaborate shape costs a dozen to several dozen zlotys.
