What is a kong?What is a kong?
Kong is a rubber toy with a shape resembling a snowman. It is hollow in the center and a small hole leads into the congo. With its help, treats for the dog can be placed inside.
The smell of delicacies hidden inside motivates the dog to find some method of extracting delicacies - proper biting, pressing the toy causes the release of small amounts of something tasty.
Interestingly, the kong can be used not only by dogs - it is a good idea to give them to a cat or ferret. It is true that the mechanism and method of removing treats will be slightly different for these animals, but it will also keep you entertained for a long time.
The story of how the kong was invented is circulating on many websites. Supposedly it all started with a retired police dog and his guardian.
Fritz, because that was the name of the dog, out of boredom he liked to bite various inedible objects - stones, sticks, shoes. One day, his guardian was repairing the car and to keep the pet busy, he threw him rubber car parts.
He noticed that Fritz had a lot of fun biting them. So he made a prototype of the first congo, and to encourage the pet to chew, he put some raw meat inside.
Seeing how much time Fritz spends on chewing on a new toy, the guardian decided to interest several companies with his idea.
Kongi, which are known today, have a slightly different shape and come in several versions, but had it not been for Fritz and his interest in rubber parts, they would not have come into this form.
Regardless of whether the story is true or not, the toy works great.
Kongi They are especially recommended for animals with behavioral problems, especially separation anxiety. A properly prepared toy will allow you to keep your dog occupied in such a way that it will stop focusing on the longing for the guardian for a moment.
The ability to bite and lick a toy is believed to have a calming effect on dogs. As I mentioned, animals that love to bite and are very active will also enjoy playing the Kong.

Playing with the congo is very simple from the point of view of the guardian of the four-legged friend.
As I mentioned, you only need to put the treats inside and give the toy to your pet. Depending on the size, the kong can keep you entertained for a few minutes or an hour.
It's a good idea to use the conga as a reward after successfully completing the instructions, or as an incentive to use the kennel cage.
What can be put inside?
Inside the congo it is worth adding delicacies in the form of mousse or pate, if you want them kong was the prize. The loose texture of such delicacies will make it quite easy to remove them from the inside of the toy.
However, if the toy is to keep your pet occupied for a long time, it is worth putting in slightly harder delicacies, mixed with pate or mousse (to stick them together and keep them inside the congo). Dry dog food or chews are unlikely to work with this toy, because they will fall out of the rubber interior quite easily.
Some guides suggest alternating between the layers of dry and wet food, tightly stuffing them inside the toy. This will make it take a long time for the animal to extract its deliciousness.
Kong it will be perfect for replacing milk teeth with permanent ones.
Swollen and itchy gums can be quite discomfort to your pet. In order to relieve itself, a young dog or cat bites objects that are not quite suitable for this.
Kong and the delicacies it contains will encourage your pet to chew without causing major damage to the environment. It is worth putting it in the fridge for a few moments before playing to bring additional relief to sore gums.
Kong can also be used in obese dogs and cats as a form of activity or reward. However, remember to follow the dietary recommendations, the portion of delicacies contained in the cong should be deducted from the daily portion of the animal's food.
For overweight animals, raw vegetables (alternating with wet food or lean mixed meat) or pre-soaked diet food can be added to the Conga.
How to choose the Conga size? How to choose the Conga size?
When choosing the perfect conga, it is worth considering the size of your pet. Other congas are suitable for large breed dogs, others for miniature breeds, a toy that is too small can be easily swallowed, and too large - it will not be chewy. The size of your pet's jaw and mandible is important.
It is also important whether the kong is to be an activity for a long time, or rather a reward "fast " - a larger toy with a small hole will take your pet for a longer time than one that will be small.
One of the recommended methods for choosing the perfect conga size is to measure your dog's muzzle - its length should be approximately the same as the congo's length. Unfortunately, this method will not work for brachycephalic breeds.
In the case of cats, there are fewer sizes, but some have a built-in bell or a pipe. Consider when the kong will be in peak use and whether the sound of a bell in the middle of the night will trigger a minor heart attack.
The hardness of the material is also important:
- The "classic " version is dedicated to dogs in their prime, with a healthy bite.
It will work for animals that are not entirely interested in chewing on everything in their environment.
- The "extrem " version is recommended for dogs that chew each toy in a few moments.
The rubber that builds this type of kong is much harder and does not delaminate quickly, even under high pressure.
- The "senior " version is dedicated to older dogs, as well as animals with dental problems and soreness in the oral cavity.
- Kong "puppy " is the best for puppies - it is soft enough not to damage delicate milk teeth, and at the same time hard enough that the animal should not bite off any fragments of the toy.
For cats and ferrets, the "classic " and "senior " (medium-hard) versions are recommended, although each animal should be considered individually.
How To Extend The Life Of The Congo?
First of all, you should regularly wash the toy - not only the top, but also the inside, with the use of dishwashing detergents.
The saliva of animals is rich in bacteria, and the remains of high-protein and high-fat food are a great medium for them. In such cases, the toy becomes smelly, slippery, and sticky, and any use of it without prior washing may result in serious food poisoning of your pet.
The wear of the toy should also be checked regularly. Any protruding pieces of rubber, additional holes or peeling of the material from which the kong is made should prompt you to quickly replace the cong with a newer model.
